AmeriCorps VISTA
The AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program enlists full-time members to support anti-poverty and community development initiatives at non-profit and public agencies. VISTA members serve for at least one year to build the organizational capacity of their host sites by developing programs, strengthening community partnerships, conducting needs assessments, and improving outreach efforts. In return for their service, members receive a living allowance, health benefits, an education award, and other benefits.
What do VISTA members do?
VISTA members focus on building the capacity of organizations rather than providing direct services. Their work includes:
Capacity building:
Developing infrastructure, improving systems, and strengthening existing resources.
Program development:
Researching, developing, and expanding programs to address community needs, such as fighting illiteracy or improving health services.
Community outreach:
Improving outreach efforts and building partnerships to connect organizations with the communities they serve.
Volunteer support:
Developing volunteer infrastructure, recruiting community members, and supporting fundraising efforts.
Who is the program for?
Organizations:
Non-profits, public agencies, and community-based organizations that need support in building sustainable anti-poverty programs.
Members:
Individuals over 18 who want to dedicate a year to full-time service in their communities to combat poverty and strengthen communities.
What are the benefits for members?
Living Allowance: A regular stipend is provided to help cover living expenses.
Education Award: An education award can be used for future education costs or to pay back qualified student loans.
Health Benefits: Limited health benefits are available to members.
Non-Competitive Eligibility: A year of VISTA service can provide non-competitive eligibility for federal employment.
Training and Experience: Members gain valuable skills, training, and work experience in a capacity-building role.
What are the long-term goals?
The ultimate goal of the VISTA program is to create sustainable solutions to poverty by building the capacity of community organizations. Projects aim to create lasting change so that the need for VISTA resources decreases over time as the organization's own infrastructure strengthens.
